EX-rank’s Replay (263)

Translator: Wan ED/PR: Personal Ghost

48. First practice (2)

Overall stats was a value representing power, mana, defensive, agility, etc.

As a unit expressing the Player’s body abilities without considering skills or Gwangrim, it was a thing mentioned first when usually discussing Players’ standards.

Be it in the game or this world.

‘However, both in the game and this world, the skills, Gwangrims and items are more important than the level in all actual fights. Moreover, based on the tactics and superpower compatibility, a high level gap can be overturned. The Player’s standard can’t be judged only with the overall stats level.’

It was as such, but there were many cases where combat category skills and Gwangrims grew together with the individual’s training and overall stats level raise.

Even while the overall stats level couldn’t perfectly express the combat power, it was a fact that it was a universal value to judge the Players’ standards.

And, though it differed depending on an individual, the overall stats level usually rose explosively between the time as a highschooler and the beginning of 20s.

‘But Ju Su-hyeok and Maeng Hyodon had high overall stats level starting from the middle school.’

The 1st year highschool Players’ overall stats levels were usually between 10 and 20.

On average, the levels grew gradually and slowly, and during the 2nd year the students would be between 20 and 25, and in the 3rd year between 26 and 30.

But that was a highschooler standard for the entire country.

The country average had no much meaning in Korea’s most prestigious Player special highschool, Eungwang School.

‘The average of Eungwang School and whole country are different.’

It would be rather strange if Korea’s most prestigious highschool and the country’s average were exactly the same.

Because the average or median of all examinees’ university exam grades was between grade 4 and 6, the average of successful admissions to the most prestigious universities couldn’t be less than grade 4.

Most of the successful admission received grade 1, and even in the grade 1, there was intense competition of gap of 1 or 2 points.

It was exactly the same in Eungwang School.

I, Yu Sang-hun and Jang Namuk, starting as 3rd year middle schoolers taking the Eungwang School entrance exam, had an overall stats level 10, which was the average for the 1st year highschooler.

Even Yu Sang-hui, who concentrated on healing abilities manifestation and research field, was in the mid 30s of overall stats level.

‘I also grew fast.’

Currently, my overall stats level much exceeded the average standard of the 3rd year highschool Player in the country.

But as the overall stats rapidly rose and exceeded the 30 through Baek Ho-gun’s training, it almost came to a halt.

The opponent was the Myth category Ho, but beyond that I had to raise it through actual battle, not sparring.

‘Before entering the otherworld, I have to check my stats.’

I was a bit reluctant, but as an attack party Player, I decided to inspect my status before I made a mistake.

‘I opened a status window after a long time. The overall stats rose by 1 since I went to China, huh?’

My gaze stopped at the name of a certain skill.

‘Suitable Other Dimension Future Modification Exclusive Menu Lv. 5’

It was an item which caused Yu Sang-hun and Jang Namuk a nightmare under the name of ‘Replay’.

After learning what kind of crazy influence Replay had, I didn’t open the status window even once.

I was worried that I would select Replay by mistake, but in fact I just hated to open the status window.

‘Even so, I will have to consider Replay a bit more someday and use it again.’

Even the chess pieces not moved by hand had to be moved to checkmate.

I still didn’t know Replay’s possible target usage, certain effects and influence, but I couldn’t leave it alone.

“Jo Uisin, do you have any questions?”

I came back to my senses at teacher Ham Geunhyeong-nim’s voice.

Right now, when I looked around I would look like I was reading Player SAT-K’s predicted otherworld conquest information.

Thanks to otherworlds simplification and patternization of the lower their rarity, when the satellite predicted the outbreak of a low rarity otherworld, it would send conquest information together with the warning.

“No, I’m fine.”

“There is not much time remaining until the departure. If you have questions, ask straight away.”

Teacher Ham Geun-hyeong-nim wasn’t one to nag, but he spoke somewhat sternly perhaps because it was before our first practice.

Some among the children, who read the entire conquest information, left their baggage to the park manager.

And looking at it, majority of them came light, packing only an item card and cardholder, but there were some children with a lot of baggage.

“You have a lot of baggage. Are You going somewhere after the practice ends?”

At Sawol Seeum’s question, Kim Yuri smiled awkwardly.

“I talked with the kids, who go home, to bring lunch boxes with them! But because I missed the timing to talk about it straight away… Hahaha.”

Kim Yuri was said to be on the defense team, but it was actually more like a field trip.

But even so, I guess she was worried and nervous about the class children going on their first attack team practice.

The daily students also brought lunch boxes for the dormitory students and said it was Kim Yuri’s suggestion, but they couldn’t say anything until we were just about to depart?

The dormitory students thanked the daily students and asked about the menu.

“What did you bring?”

“I have ciabatta sandwiches and bagel sandwiches! There are several kinds of bagels. Ah, there are also ones with green apple jam.”

At Han Yi’s question, Kim Yuri spoke with a bright voice.

As if she gained strength at the thought of a sweet sandwich, Han Yi looked at the baggage with an expectant face.

“This one prepared summer healthy deserts. You should look forward to the taste and nutrition.”

Hwang Jiho lightly raised the ice boxes to show them off.

Hwang Jiho was very trustworthy in the field of menu selection and cooking.

But Sawol Seeum, who suffered greatly because of Hwang Jiho’s scheme in the past, asked with a face full of doubts.

“Does it taste okay? It doesn’t have pine needles or red ginseng, correct?”

“Menu should be revealed just before dining, right? But if you’re truly curious, I can tell you.”

“… I’m fine.”

“Hahahaha! There are also sweet ones. How about it? Are you curious about the menu?”

“No.”

Sawol Seeum and Han Yi built an iron wall, but Hwang Jiho laughed as if something was good.

I guess in the geezer’s eyes, the kids being nervous before the practice and building an iron wall against Hwang Jiho looked good.

“I made almond tortilla pizza.”

Min Geurin selected a menu with almonds, which Song Daeseok liked again.

The children who secretly guessed Song Daeseok’s taste, looked at Min Geurin and Song Daeseok with pleased faces.

The problem was Song Daeseok.

‘This time he isn’t empty-handed.’

Before we decided to each bring a drink to the after-party at the end of exams.

Because only Song Daeseok didn’t bring anything, he was scolded by Min Geurin and taught a severe lesson while drinking ‘Something, which was a drink once’, which was a mix version of fruit juice, soda ion drink, iced cappuccino, ginger ale, ade, milk, milk shake, red ginseng juice and pine needle juice.

As if there was an effect, he was holding something in his hands.

“I told Daeseok to bring gimbap[1]. Because the snack bar is around the corner, even if he doesn’t make it personally, he can go buy it and…”

At Min Geurin’s words, Song Daeseok had a somewhat poor reaction.

Even besides the national game wreck stagnant and rotten oil, his childhood friend, Min Geurin noticed Song Daeseok was somewhat strange.

“Daeseok-ah?”

“… Uh.”

“Daeseok-ah, did you perhaps not bring anything inside?”

“No! I packed at home!”

“What did you bring?”

Min Geurin stretched out her hand towards the bag.

Song Daeseok was about to hide the bag behind his back for a moment, but he just handed it over.

As Song Daeseok was much taller, if he just raised the lunch box, Min Geurin’s hand wouldn’t reach it.

Min Geurin, who opened the bag, was shocked.

“… What is this?!”

Inside the bag Song Daeseok brought, there was nothing but nori and rice.

There was also a lunch box of nori and instant rice.

The children made faces saying ‘Song Daeseok, again?’, but Mok Uram alone showed an enthusiastic response.

“I think that’s an amazing menu! When I thought about the meals abroad, I gathered money to buy an instant rice dish. But because it was precious and expensive, I couldn’t eat it often. I also wanted to eat nori, but I couldn’t even dream of it in my situation.”

“… instant rice is precious and expensive? Weren’t you ripped off?”

“Yes? However, I heard it’s natural that exported products are expensive…”

Mok Uram’s sad hogu history of eating instant rice for 100 times worthy of a market price continued.

Anyhow, Song Daeseok brought nori and rice, and there was also a class child who liked it.

However, Min Geurin seemed to be very disappointed.

There was high chance that Song Daeseok was completely thoughtless, but in Min Geurin’s eyes it may have looked like he was still subtly stubborn against the class children.

“Daeseok, you fool, stupid! You became more of a stone head after entering the association!”

At the words ‘stone head’, Maeng Hyodon, who was standing blankly, made a face as if he was hit to the bone.

Song Daeseok, who heard that sound directed at him personally, was seriously injured.

“I’m sorry! I was wrong!”

“I wanted to eat gimbap outside together with Daeseok after a long time… I won’t give Daeseok what I brought!”

It was an elementary student worthy comment, but the influence of Min Geurin’s words was enormous.

The otherworld conquest didn’t start yet, but Song Daeseok became incapable of fighting.

Min Geurin reacted a bit violently, but because Song Daeseok prepared something like that, everyone seemed to think that he deserved it.

The children went to take care of their baggage, but besides the children who brought lunch boxes, there was also Kwon Lena.

Kwon Lena took care of a violin case.

‘She brought a violin case again.’

Now Kwon Lena had a superpower violin and a superpower bow.

As it was possible to cardify the violin and bow, it wasn’t necessary to trouble oneself with bringing a violin case.

‘I don’t know because the in-game Kwon Lena didn’t learn violin.’

The design was a bit different from the previous one, so maybe she was obsessed with violin cases.

Because the case brought to the Ju-Oh Island was from a carbon fiber material, and this time she brought a case from leather.

‘If so, what is the content of the violin case?’

I didn’t think for long.

Matching the time predicted beforehand, the alarm rang with the otherworld’s entrance outbreak.

Particles of light gradually rose into the air and the space around the predicted point of the otherworld outbreak began to twist.

Kieeek…. Kieeeeeek…!

I heard the sound as if dislocated cogwheels were forced to mesh and move.

When the sound stopped, I saw a dark superpower wave come out from the otherworld crack like a haze.

“This the otherworld’s entrance.”

Yong Jegeon took the lead.

“Then let’s go for the first practice.”

Behind him, I and class children followed.

* * *

When Hwang-ho, who stood at the rearmost, disappeared in the otherworld crack as the last among the 1st year class 0’s attack team.

There was a commotion at the Olympic Park’s entrance, and an air van engraved with the Eternal Lake team logo stopped close to Kim Yuri.

The van’s door opened and a bit disheveled Kwon Jane appeared.

“Uh? Teacher Kwon Jane-nim! Hello!”

As she became an honorary teacher, during academic schedules Kwon Jane requested to be addressed as ‘teacher-nim’.

As they were during a practice right now, Kim Yuri called Kwon Jane teacher-nim instead of senior-nim.

“… Hi.”

Kwon Jane looked at the otherworld crack and made a disappointed face.

“Late…”

“Yes? Late…?”

Besides Kwon Jane, others also had frustrated faces.

The people, who came out of the air van, were wearing short capes with the team logo represented by the violin and ‘E’ and ‘L’ standing for Eternal Lake name.

Kim Yuri realized that all those adults with the faces like they were about to cry were team members of one of the top 10 pro Player teams, Eternal Lake.

“I wanted to cheer for your first departure to fight. I planned to perform a march song praying for the victory and safe return.”

Kwon Jane was disappointed, but while saying she will wait and cheer outside, she prepared for the on-spot performance.

The Eternal Lake team members moved busily, while setting up musical instruments.

Bang! Claang!

Suddenly Jared Lee dropped the music stand and made a flustered face.

Jared Lee’s gaze was on the otherworld crack.

“Jared?”

“…Is Eungwang School’s first practice so difficult?”

“Yes?”

Jared Lee examined the otherworld crack and asked with awkward Korean.

Usually he spoke it so well he was treated as a blond-haired Korean, but as if Jared Lee was flustered, he used a strange tone.

“This otherworld conquest difficulty is high for a first practice.”

At Jared Lee’s words, Ham Geun-hyeong replied:

“Eungwang School 1st year students can deal well enough with the R rank difficulty.”

Jared Lee blinked, and then examined the otherworld crack again.

Jared Lee, who activated a skill to examine the otherworld crack again, shook his head.

“It isn’t R rank! It’s at least SR rank and… There is a possibility the difficulty will raise even higher!”

*~*~*

[1] gimbap — I won’t blame you if you call it sushi. In a very simple terms you can think about it this way. But to defend Song Daeseok, I want to think he just misunderstood that severely what Min Geurin said, because nori/laver is ‘gim’ and rice is ‘bap’.

Translator’s note: Jo Uisin, why did you come to hate looking at the status window? Is it perhaps related to… um… ‘Some loading failed’ part? Hmmm?

And here marks the chaoter where we last see his status window like thus. Seriously, when is it gonnahave a comeback? Even if its just the overall level, I would to know please.

Thanks for the chapter, Wan <3

    1. He really hates to look at it.

Thank you for reading, Nishicchi <3

I am under impression that gimbap is like onigiri or omusubi, actually. Or possibly nigiri-zushi or sushi roll for the non-triangle ones.

Nevertheless, Song Daeseok is a gift that keeps giving.

    1. Me writing the note: *failing to remember the diversity of dishes put under the name of ‘sushi’ outside of Japan*.

But also I’m pretty sure I saw a triangle gimbap before, so the ‘sushi’ amalgamation is still somewhat correct.

      1. Apasserby

The rice used for sushi is seasoned differently with vinegar, and the fillings/toppings are typically raw/uncooked.
Meanwhile onigiri/omusubi uses lightly salted rice, and the toppings are cooked or preserved, in case of umeboshi. Typically they’re shaped into triangles, but not quite always. Depends on a few regional variation, I think.

Kimbap, to my understanding, is closely resembles onigiri more, with similarly cooked fillings. The shapes do vary more compared to onigiri tho.

        1. Yes, it appears so. (Also, thank you for explaining it, I actually never knew the exact differences between them.)

  3. Thanks for the chapter!
That is so sad and funny that Daeseok literally brought gim and bap. Considering he looked like he wanted to hide it, he must have realized how badly he messed up as soon as Geurin mentioned she figured he’d grab it from that snack bar around the corner. This is like someone bringing baby carrots and plain vanilla cake squares because someone told them to bring carrot cake. And even that doesn’t quite convey the same quality as microwaved instant rice. Poor dude haha. Also, Mok Uram is a gem but I’m so worried about his naivety when it comes to financial matters. I’m really glad he made it to our crew; It seems like attending school and socializing will be really good for him.

    1. Thank you for reading <3

I really want to find a way to defend Song Daeseok, but my guy… How could you misinterpret it so severely.

Mok Uram may be the luckiest person in the world, somehow.

  4. Ty for the chapters… looks like I have caught up, seriously thank you for picking up this I always wondered why it was getting machine translated when the story is so good I thought everyone would fight over it to translate it… thank you for doing the story justice

    1. Thank you for reading!~

Perhaps other translators realized how hard this novel would be to translate and had enough sanity to think it through. Or they didn’t want to translate extremely long novel that is still outgoing, as it’s serious commitment.

Or perhaps it was because there was MTL. I feel like a lot of translators feel that novel that got MTL isn’t worthy translating, as people will just read MTL.

I don’t know. I started with translating this novel, so it feels like I’m someone who got into the translation circle through the back door. It’s something you weren’t supposed to do, but I already do it, so I’m not sure why I shouldn’t do it.

Well, thank you for reading again, I’m glad to make you happy~ <3

  5. Vetus Fabula

Being Mok Uram’s friend would exhaust me emotionally… Seriously its like he is a magnet for scams!
