EX-rank’s Replay (377)

59. True nature (12)

Because of the events this week, a lot of time was wasted.

I thought of several moves to decrease the time to leave the country, and among them was to borrow a private plane from a powerful person.

‘If there was nothing wrong, I wanted to ask Hwang Jiho.’

As he persistently kept contacting me and asking about my well-being, it seemed like he would absolutely not lend a private plane to go overseas, and instead call Hyangrok to make a new elixir.

As I kept ignoring his contact attempts, it was certain that he would prepare an elixir that was difficult to swallow.

As it seemed that Eun-ho would be angry with him, I probably wouldn’t be given a baesok[1] like the previous time.

Midst of that, the son fool Yeom Bangyeol expressed his thanks to me for saving Yeom Junyeol, and was first to suggest repaying his gratitude to the benefactor.

So I brought up the story of a private plane to Yeom Bangyeol.

‘It would also be more comfortable for Seong Gukeon to adjust his schedule to take a private plane.’

It might be a problem if an assemblyman took the private plane owned by the world’s top Player, but this part would be solved by the secretary Jeon Mu-yeong.

Jeon Mu-yeong had experience making plausible excuses and justifications for Seong Gukeon’s actions that bordered on reckless and settling them down.

I believed that he would make full countermeasures before leaving the country worthy of my Playable Character for this case.

After I briefly explained my request to Yeom Bangyeol, Kim Sinrok confirmed again.

“… Jo Uisin-gun and student Seong Gukeon are planning to board the Red Lion team’s private plane?”

“Yes, senior Jeon Muyeong-nim is also boarding with us.”

With the end of this question, Kim Sinrok didn’t speak for a while.

He was looking at me with a face like he couldn’t understand.

The introduction was long, but there was nothing to be exactly confused about.

“There is probably no way of it, but I’ll ask just in case…”

Kim Sinrok beat around the bush and then asked.

As if he was looking forward to Kim Sinrok’s reaction, Yong Jegeon forgot to even cover his mouth, and was looking at Kim Sinrok with a grin.

“… You didn’t ask to board it to go sightseeing because You’re curious about the private plane’s structure, right?”

“Hahaha! No way! What were you thinking? By what chance did you think that?”

It wasn’t particularly funny, but Yong Jegeon laughed loudly, as if there was something good about it.

Every time his shoulders moved up and down as he laughed, his cyan hair swayed around in the air.

Kim Sinrok looked at the movement of this hair with an expressionless face, but from some point he was holding cutter scissors.

It seemed that it was a reflection of an unconscious desire to cut them, because he was annoyed by the sight of Yong Jegeon’s smile and his long hair.

‘But Yong Jegeon hates cutting his hair so much that he dyes it, so he wouldn’t easily let Kim Sinrok cut it.’

Yong Jegeon, who saw the cutter scissors in Kim Sinrok’s hand, smiled even more excitedly, and Kim Sinrok, who saw it, made an enraged face.

Looking at that, I guess Kim Sinrok tried and failed to cut Yong Jegeon’s hair a few times.

After turning his gaze away from Yong Jegeon, Kim Sinrok spoke firmly with a stiff voice.

“Jo Uisin-gun, You have been unconscious for three days. And based on what I heard here, You have been injured the moment You stood up, but You’re thinking of going overseas the very next day?”

“… Uh? Uisin-ah, the three days you weren’t attending the school were because you were unconscious? You left that out and suggested such a strategy to me?”

The voice of Yong Jegeon, who kept looking excited, changed.

Kim Sinrok recognized his friend’s emotional change without fail.

Kim Sinrok focused on the word ‘strategy’.

“Such a strategy? What did Jo Uisin-gun do?”

“I’m worried whether I should say it or not, but I feel like I have to say.”

“Is it related to the injures Jo Uisin-gun suffered?”

“Ye, there is a very big connection between the strategy Uisin-i suggested and the injuries.”

“… Stop beating around the bush and speak quickly!”

Yong Jegeon looked like he was about to reveal the entire process of that strategy.

I expected that it would get revealed someday, but if he spoke about it right now, Kim Sinrok might stop me.

I opened my mouth to cut off Yong Jegeon’s words and show my standpoint.

“I’m completely healed. There are no injuries left on my body, and the superpower wave stabilized fast thanks to the Dragon King God’s shaman maidens-nim.”

“Your body or superpower wave may be alright, but what about your mind?”

“Thanks to the consideration of the Yong tribe’s Members and Red Lion, I slept soundly last night. So I’m fine.”

Silence fell.

As if they heard my words, but just couldn’t comprehend them, Yong Jegeon and Kim Sinrok were making faces like teachers, who were preparing to educate.

The two weren’t humans, but they were Eungwang School’s full-time teachers, and looking at their faces I thought they were indeed teachers.

After a while, Yong Jegeon spoke with a tone like he was teaching a young child.

“Do you know that soldiers that return from a battlefield or Players, who return from an otherworld conquest, suffer from trauma even after the physical treatment is over?”

“…Yes.”

“The fight where a part of your body was pierced and ripped would also leave wounds on your mind. Sufficient break and leisure should help for mental aftereffects. So it’s necessary to recognized the necessity of breaks…”

“Wait, how much on earth was Jo Uisin-gun injured for you to speak like that?”

When Yong Jegeon was about to open his mouth.

Knock knock.

We heard a knock at the door.

I felt the energies of two powerful superpower waves behind the door.

At Yong Jegeon’s words that it was okay to come in, the door opened with a lot of power, and I saw Cheongryong and Yeom Bangyeol.

“Did you finish the meal? As Yeom Bangyeol came back, I wanted to talk.”

Cheongryong looked around the three of us, and then cautiously asked as if sensing something serious.

“I guess you were in the middle of a conversation. If it’s an urgent conversation, we’ll come later.”

“No, it’s fine.”

I held back Cheongryong, who tried to step back.

Before Yong Jegeon and Kim Sinrok could say something, I added.

“I think first of all we should talk about what has happened yesterday.”

Considering the chance there might be ears listening, I said by only moving my lips, ‘Cadmus’.

The Dragon Slayer Cadmus, who tried to assassinate Yong Jegeon and Yeom Junyeol.

When I mentioned that being, the atmosphere changed.

As if Cheongryong and Yeom Bangyeol had similar thoughts, they hurriedly entered the room, and released their superpower waves.

Once Cheongryong’s superpower wave covered the room, the dragon drawings on the walls started to move.

The dragons moved following Cheongryong’s superpower wave and two sat themselves at the side of the door, and the remaining dragons at the side of the pillars.

‘Are you strengthening the barrier? It seems like you have figured out there are traitors inside, huh? Okay, it’s good to be cautious.’

As in the game they were the people, who were betrayed by their allies and withdrew from the battlefield without achieving their intentions, it would be better for them to keep on guard even in their base.

It would be a painful situation to have to be suspicious of their family, but it seemed much better than a situation where they’d be stabbed in the back by their family.

Swish!

The flame-like superpower wave flared up around Yeom Bangyeol and headed to the walls.

After the dragons in the walls sat in place, Yeom Bangyeol’s superpower wave covered the top of them, and as the power of red flames mingled with Cheongryong’s energy, the barrier was made even sturdier.

“The benefactor knows very well why we’re like this, but it seems you don’t know it yet. It’s rather irksome, but please understand.”

“… I’m fine.”

Kim Sinrok had a somewhat confused face, because he wasn’t able to hear about the circumstances in detail yet, but he nodded at Cheongryong’s words.

Cheongryong spoke with a heavy voice.

“I knew there was a dragon being with the legend of a dragon slayer. I lament that I didn’t think of the possibility of him targeting us and of making countermeasures.”

“That Cadmus dares to target our Junyeol-yi…! For such a reason! Both Heavens and men will rage!”

Yeom Bangyeol spoke with anger.

His anger was natural, but something bothered me about his words.

‘Do you know the reason Cadmus was targeting Yeom Junyeol?’

No matter how tortured, it didn’t seem like Cadmus would obediently open his mouth.

It didn’t seem like the founding hero of Thebes, who was silently working as a servant of Ares for eight years, would simply open his mouth overnight.

“Did you learn the reason the dragon slayer targeted our Junyeol-yi?”

“Yes, we have learned thanks to the cooperation of the Dragon King God’s shaman maidens.”

At Yong Jegeon’s question, Yeom Bangyeol explained.

Cadmus was a dragon slayer, but he was a dragon being.

This is the place where the dragons and the Dragon King God’s shaman maidens resided for a long time, and a place where the Dragon King God descended a few times.

So though he was a dragon of a different country, it was said that those recognized as dragons in this world were under a powerful influence of the Dragon King God. [2]

“Perhaps he is not a mythological hero for nothing, we have learned little. Even so, we have certainly figured out the cause of it.”

“So, what was the reason that dragon slayer targeted our Junyeol-yi?”

“It was because of the power our Junyeol-yi has.”

Starting a moment ago, Yeom Junyeol was naturally titled ‘our Junyeol-yi’ because of the two, but no one thought it was strange.

Yeom Bangyeol gave the reason Cadmus was targeting ‘our Junyeol-yi’.

“Strictly speaking, our Junyeol-yi is a descendant, not a Yong, but he has the ability to summon a ‘dragon’. He said that the descendants with such a type of ability were targeted for assassination.”

Whosh!

Yong Jegeon sharply turned his head with his eyes open when those words ended.

Yong Jegeon’s gaze was directed at Kim Sinrok.

“… If the Yong tribe’s descendant, who has a power to summon a ‘dragon’ is an assassination target, then the descendants with the abilities similar to him would also be the same.”

“Now that you say that, that’s right.”

Cheongryong also looked at Kim Sinrok with a worried gaze.

Kim Sinrok also had a somewhat surprised face.

“Doesn’t your Gwangrim summon tigers and bears?”

Kim Sinrok’s Gwangrim, which wasn’t revealed even once.

I guess that the nature[3] of that power was very similar to Yeom Junyeol.

‘Then perhaps the reason why Dark Mastermind is targeting Kim Sinrok…’

Dark Mastermind might be wary of Yeom Junyeol and Kim Sinrok’s ability.

But why?

Yeom Junyeol’s Gwangrim ‘Hongryong Summoning’ was powerful, but wasn’t invincible, and there were many more powerful abilities.

Kim Sinrok’s Gwangrim was probably the same in that regard too.

‘It would be another reason, not the ability’s prowess, to target the two, but there are still too little clues.’

Even when considering Dark Mastermind’s action and the two descendant’s abilities, no answer came out.

In the nervous atmosphere, Cheongryong opened his mouth.

“With the trigger of knowing the cause, the Dragon King God’s shaman maidens suggested taking care of the dragon slayer.”

“The Dragon King’s shaman maidens with the dragon slayer? Do they mean to be a jailer?”

“That’s what they suggested. The only beings who use the power of dragons, but are not descendants or dragons are human beings, the Dragon King God’s shaman maidens. So in consideration of the safety, I’m thinking of allocating a Dragon King God’s shaman maiden at the Cadmus’s prison.”

I unknowingly opened my mouth when that story came out.

“No.”

As if they didn’t expect me to suddenly object, the gazes of everyone in the room turned towards me.

Even the dragons in the walls, that made the barrier, were quietly looking towards me.

“If You’re worried about Cadmus’ counter-attack, I think it would be better to allocate a member of the Red Lion team to him.”

“It seems that the Yong tribe’s benefactor has thoughts, eh?”

“Uisin-i was preparing before we encountered Cadmus. He was handling it like he already knew that the dragon slayer would attack.”

Yong Jegeon added unnecessary things, but I was thankful because they added persuasive power to the statement I was about to make here.

“I have a request related to the Dragon King God’s shaman maidens-nim. No, to be precise…”

I recalled my Playable Character, who was still in middle-school, as I opened my mouth.

“It’s related to the candidates for the Dragon King God’s shaman maiden position.”

*~*~*

[1] baesok — 배숙 — a punch made with Korean pear, ginger, honey, etc…

[2] So though he was a dragon of a different country, it was said that those recognized as dragons in this world were under a powerful influence of the Dragon King God. — depending on the interpretation, this sentence could be suggesting ‘those recognized as dragons by the Dragon King God’.

[3] nature — same word as chapter title.

    The author 😅

    Thx for the chapter 💛

    1. *cough cough* besides that one.

      Thx for reading <3

  2. Oooh, interesting! We’ve never seen Kim Sinrok’s Gwangrim before. If Yeom Junyeol’s real strength lies in his ability to assimilate with hongryong, I wonder if Kim Sinrok can do the same with his choice between his summons. In which case… when they fully achieve assimilation, would they thus be recognized as new Jin people by the world? (there was mention of Cadmus being recognized as a Yong by the powers that be, so I’m wondering if the recognition would be kinda similar for a new Jin person? Kinda like the birth of a new myth in this case?) I’m trying to think of why this ability would be troublesome to the Dark Mastermind, but that’s all I can come up with. Hmmm.

    1. That’s a very interesting take, actually.

“Hey, so is anyone starting to suspect an existence of some malicious force that is pushing Jo Uisin into sacrificing himself, while preventing others from stopping him, or is it just me?”

    …you mean Uisin’s subconscious itself?

    1. Yes. If Jo Uisin’s subconscious has reality bending powers then it certainly would be a culprit.

Summoning.. Is it to counter a mind controlling ability? :V
