EX-rank’s Replay (293)

51. Student representative general election (1) [1]

⟨Selection complete.⟩

After I selected Son Mingi, a message of completed selection appeared, unlike with Hwang Jiho.

Like this, Son Mingi’s today’s dream was confirmed.

Son Mingi would dream from the moment the entrance exam started, to the moment he was mercilessly killed by the Enemy, just like Jang Namuk and Yu Sang-hun explained to me before.

After the system message played out, Hwang Jiho spoke.

“It’s faint, but I feel a superpower wave, eh?”

At Hwang Jiho’s words, I recalled what Jang Namuk said before.

— And when I looked with my ‘eyes’, both of us were clouded with a black fog.

It seemed that Jang Namuk discovered remnants of my superpower wave around himself and Yu Sang-hun.

I decided to speak up about it beforehand, to prevent any annoying situation occurring later.

“Jang Namuk said he saw something like a black fog on the target I selected, when he looked at the target through the ‘Eyes of the Star Maiden’. There may be remnants of my superpower wave on Son Mingi.”

“There is no being with the Insight category skill on the level of ‘Eyes of the Star Maiden’ around that bastard, but we will prepare for this too. Tell me more details about the method you used[2].”

At Hwang Jiho’s words, I explained to him the ‘Replay’.

I couldn’t make any sound about a different dimension or a game.

Even so, I explain in details about the results of using it on Yu Sang-hun twice, Son Mingi once and Jang Namuk once, up till now.

“Then to summarize, Jo Uisin, the person who you selected will see the ‘future of the time when you didn’t exist’, through a dream, eh?”

I don’t know if it was okay to express that nightmare as future.

Because when I used Replay, they would dream about the events that have no possibility of happening now.

It was misleading, but I nodded my head for now.

“You mean it’s an ability that is possible to use on one person at a time? Moreover, it takes time to rest.”

“Uh, it took two and one day to rest for Yu Sang-hun, and it took four days for Son Mingi.”

“You said that when you used it on Yu Sang-hun the second time, it decreased from two days to one day to reset, right? Then there is a possibility it will also decrease with Son Mingi.”

After that we made a plan on how to watch Son Mingi when Replay was used on him.

Even while Hwang Jiho had a Q&A with me, his alter-egos were moving, checking the records.

But besides speaking slower than usual, I anew felt amazement at the fact that Hwang Jiho, who was conversing with me, was thinking clearly.

Around the time we wrapped up our conversation, the alter-egos stopped moving, so it seemed he already checked all records he was trying to check.

‘He found no traces of Pungbaek, Unsa and Usa, huh?’

Hwang Jiho pressed his temples and sighed shortly.

At the same time as Hwang Jiho was sighing, the alter-egos buried their bodies deep in the armchairs or leaned their heads against the bookshelves and closed their eyes.

As he said he forgot the flow of time, I guess he was examining records without a wink of sleep.

“The ability to interfere with others’ dreams? The dream related abilities are pretty rare and difficult to use. It’s even more so if it’s a Player’s dream.”

After all alter-egos took a break, as if he had some spare energy, Hwang Jiho started to make useless sounds.

“What’s more, the dream you’re showing is pretty special, and you activate it from a long range if you just meet the target once. You mean you use such an ability without any risk?”

Shining golden magic power surfaced in Hwang Jiho’s eyes, as he looked at me carefully with a Brilliant Gaze.

Hwang Jiho was saying something again, but frankly, I wasn’t bothered with it.

I was more bothered by something else.

‘Why are you letting a child sleep here? Shouldn’t you at least cover him with a blanket?’

My gaze was drawn to the child, who buried his body into the recliner and was sleeping.

No, it wasn’t a simple child, it was Hwang Jiho’s alter-ego, but, no, even so…

Woof?

When my mental conflict gradually grew worse, I suddenly came back to my senses at the voice of an angel in my arms.

In the end, that child was also Hwang Jiho, and I almost had useless thoughts.

As expected, Snare was great.

“If you get careless just for a moment, you turn stupid straight away, eh?”

As I thanked Snare, while stroking its head, Hwang Jiho felt ridiculous.

After the conversation ended, I decided to return to the dormitory.

I heard the words that I could stay for a night, but the tigers at the mansion had much more things to worry about today, so I couldn’t make them worry about a guest.

Especially Jeok-ho, who kept his mouth shut, and his face dazed after the story of Pungbaek, Usa and Unsa came out, excused himself and returned to his room first, the moment we left the 5th floor.

When I was about to return to the dormitory, while going on a walk with Baek Ho-gun and Snare, Hwang Jiho, who came out to say goodbye, said a word:

“Thanks for the gift. I’ll drink the remaining share well.”

Was he truly so happy about such an insignificant gift?

Somehow his appearance made me think of the university junior, who was greatly happy about a coffee can or a coffee mix.

The two’s personalities and appearances didn’t resemble each other even a bit, so was it because both of them were members of a chaebeol family and liked tea?

* * *

Small Hero Son Mingi, who at one time used to be a rich and powerful honor student, about to be admitted to Eungwang School and the only child of the presidents of a solid company, and thought to be a pre-Star Player.

Currently he was a middle school graduate with the highschool qualification, neglected in a relative’s house on the countryside.

Son Mingi’s parents’ company went completely bankrupt, and his mother tried to escape the mountain of debt by taking a divorce, but was discovered to commit a fraud in the process of attracting investors, and couldn’t avoid a lawsuit.

His family was broken and scattered because of the so-called ‘Son Meatjig incident’, but Son Mingi thought that his parents deserved it.

‘Serves you right. Get fucked after trying to flee.’

After all banks refused to give a loan to Son Mingi’s family company, and people trying to sue them for fraud, Son Mingi’s parents abandoned him and tried to flee overseas.

This was interrupted thanks to the anonymous tip given to the group of creditors.

In truth, that anonymous’ identity was the Ho tribe, but the creditors and Son Mingi’s side couldn’t know it.

After that, under the reason of big damages and worries about an escape, an imprisonment warrant was issued and Son Mingi’s parents were taken into custody.

With his parents ending like that, Son Mingi was living in the house of a relative in the mountain area, whose name he wasn’t even familiar with.

In the room reeking of the moldy smell, he operated the device with eyeballs alone, observed the activities of the Eungwang School bastards from the same group as him from beyond the screen, got humiliated and angry trying to please his badly-tempered grandfather suffering from dementia.

But Son Mingi still had hope.

That hope was Yu Sang-hui.

‘Yu Sang-hui has healing superpowers, so she can heal me. Well, trying to restore both arms and both legs, the lifetime will be shortened. But if not that, she could introduce me to the hospital she has connections with and…’

At first glance Yu Sang-hui looked gentle, and she decided to appear like this for Son Mingi.

When he sent over ten device messages to Yu Sang-hui, she would send a reply once or twice.

She would say she was sorry that she couldn’t reply straight away, and reveal some indications of helping him reconcile with other kids like Yu Sang-hun.

Son Mingi thought of digging into Yu Sang-hui’s soft heart to get back his hands and feet.

Of course, this positive outlook was only Yu Sang-hui’s hope torture, evoking the delusions of Son Mingi attempting a mental victory.

Yu Sang-hui had no plans to forgive Son Mingi, who tried to kill her younger brother and manipulate press.

She only sent a few messages with a subtle tone for a small revenge.

But recently she didn’t even send ambiguous messages.

‘She didn’t reply today either! Is she busy with exams, because she is a 3rd year? When the exams end, she will relax, so I should speak up about the restoration surgery straight away then.’

Son Mingi, who was busy rolling his eyeballs to control the device, closed his eyes.

Because he overused his eyes recently, his eyes were extremely dry and stiff, but as he didn’t have arms and legs, he couldn’t pick up eyewash or artificial tears.

Son Mingi closed his eyes and absurdly deluded himself with a success as a Player using Yu Sang-hui, but the moment his consciousness was cut off and he fell asleep.

Son Mingi was in that Eungwang School’s gym.

While he wasn’t able to realize that he was dreaming, Son Mingi was dragged into that dream.

With the last scene of the Demonic Beast species Enemy pouncing at him, he woke up from that dream again.

“Eeeack!”

Son Mingi spat out curses, trembling, but because of the hit on the wall to keep quiet from the other room, he couldn’t even openly scream.

And someone was observing Son Mingi, who couldn’t easily sleep and was tossing around, from behind the window without a mosquito net.

The next day, morning.

I checked the weather predictions sent by my kind disciple Yeom Junyeol even today and the moment I left my dormitory room door, I faced an unexpected person in front of my room.

It was Mok Uram.

‘After he was given a workshop by the Hwang Myeong Foundation, I almost never met him in the morning.’

I left early to hear the results of Son Mingi observation from Hwan Jiho, but I didn’t expect to meet with Mok Uram.

“Hello.”

“Yeah, hi.”

“Class vice president, I want to consult…”

After I nodded my head indicating for him to speak, Mok Uram spoke about what happened yesterday with a lifeless voice.

Yesterday, after I went to Hwang Myeong-ho’s great mansion, Mok Uram and Kwon Lena headed to school, and it seemed that they ran into our class’ dormitory students.

Naturally, the dormitory students gathered to eat together, but he said that Kwon Lena gradually became less talkative.

“Because Lena-nim was worried, I talked much more, but I’m worried if I didn’t make a mistake saying unnecessary words instead.”

Mok Uram repeated everything he said to Kwon Lena that day, and asked to check if he didn’t make any mistake enough to be rude among them.

He seemed that he was worried that he made a mistake about something, because his Korean was unskilled, but excluding the sense of hogu’s energy, there were no major problems.

‘Yesterday afternoon she would be relived at the thought that she didn’t run into Sawol Seeum, but she would be flustered when she suddenly ran into him.’

I soothed Mok Uram a bit, while walking to school.

If Mok Uram thought he did wrong for no reason and apologized to Kwon Lena, Kwon Lena would suffer even more.

While telling him it would be better to leave Kwon Lena alone for a time being, I ran into another unexpected person on the road to the school.

Mun Saeron approached, while greeting me brightly.

“Yap! Suspicious vice president-nim-ah, have you interviewed Star Yeom Junyeol?”

“Not yet. If possible, I wanted to hear his thoughts after the second match of all disciplines is held.”

We planned to put Yeom Junyeol’s interview in the school’s famous figures’ thoughts interviews special magazine after the exchange closing ceremony.

At those words Mun Saeron rejoiced.

“Excellent! Then if possible, I hope you can add a few questions.”

“What kind of questions? It can’t be a question related to Playlist.”

“Ah, it’s fine. For this Star Yeom Juneyol should also give an Okay straight away, probably?”

While saying it, Mun Saeron floated up a hologram.

She opened ‘Student representative general election candidate registration notice’.

There were four students representatives in Eungwang School, the Guideline Club president, the Earthly Wings Council president, the General Club Council president and Student Council president.

The Guideline Club president was decided among the Guideline Club’s members, but the other three were decided through the open voting.

In the case of Earthly Wings Council’s president, it was dormitory students voting, and for the General Club Council’s president, it was through votes of each club’s and small group’s presidents.

And the Student Council president was selected through the voting of the entire school.

‘It will be the day of Eungwang School’s student representative general election day soon, right?’

The deadline for the candidate registration was until this weekend, and the period of election campaign started on the next week’s Monday.

After confirming that I read the entire notice, Mun Saeron added a word.

“Because it’s a hassle to interview twice, please do it all at once. Currently, the leading candidate for the Student Council’s president is Star Yeom Juneyol.”

[1] Student representative general election — a student could also mean an honorific title of a person, who died without an official position. And election could refer to a ship or wagons, or a shipyard, or a place where a hermit lives.

[2] Tell me more details about the method you used — Ha… So Hwang-ho used 하오체 (Hao-che) tone here to make an order. I’ll give a wikipedia link that explains it better, but in short, it’s a tone used by aristocracy in the old times, so it isn’t so strange for him to use it, but Hwang-ho is usually using a plain form 해라체 (Haera-che) or casual tone 해체 (Hae-che), even when ordering things, so it’s somewhat unusual. This is a simplified explanation, so please read it on wikipedia if you wish to have a better understanding: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_speech_levels

  1. Totally agree with you, Wan!
I love the way that even seemingly insignificant characters have their own roles.
It’s been a long time since I found a story like this probably not since I finished reading Fullmetal Alchemist.
    Thank you the translation, Wan!

    1. Glad you’re enjoying it with me, thank you for reading, Envy!

  2. omg…uisin’s instinct to cover younger jiho with a blanket and have him sleep somewhere more comfortable…too precious..i can’t stop grinning
    i love them so much!!

  3. Jo Uisin : a kid is a kid is a kid, even though he’s just another alter ego.

Also, I honestly already forgot about Son Mingi.

  4. Finally caught up after binging ㅠㅠ
Thank you for all the chapters!

    1. *pat pat*

      Thank you for reading!

  5. ZionFlaker

Was Song Mingi always a human matchstick? I was under the impression he was a flailing tubeman with non-functional limbs. The Stephen Hawkings technology must be coming, given his current living environment. The simple two facts that his grandfather is mercurial and has dementia, along with not even bothering to protect him from mosquitoes, is enough to let you know he’s been abandoned/neglected

    1. I’m under an impression that he became all-limbs amputee, but I’m not completely certain with the descriptions provided.

Also can we avoid using terms like human matchstick and flailing tubeman for those people? I feel like they aren’t exactly polite terms.
